Leah's Reflections on 2017

Tuesday, December 26, 2017

With Christmas day now firmly behind us and the New year drawing ever more closer, I thought it would be fitting to write a personal reflection of 2017. For me, it has been a strange year of ups and downs but most importantly a year of self-growth.

"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind do not matter, and those who matter do not mind." - Bernard M. Baruch

As you may already know I started university in September 2016, it was kind of a rocky start for me settling into the "norm" of student life but after a couple of weeks I found my feet and it eventually became like home from home. Moving into 2017, I joined a few societies, one of which being the " UWE Event Society" where we hosted our own event in a quaint little Bristol venue. Meeting so many people at university has allowed me to grow tremendously because I have had to learn to adapt to being around a whole host of different people, some good and some bad. But equally, I  believe that people enter your life for a reason so for that I am grateful.

"The mind is everything, what you think you become" - Buddha

This year I really fell in love with meditation and trying to incorporate it into my daily life, I don't do it everyday but I try to do it as much as I can. Whenever I feel shitty or hurt about something, I use it as a method of relieving pressure and detaching myself from the person/person's or situation. Meditation has helped me sooo much during tough times this year because it has taught me that our feelings are temporary psychological states that don't last forever.

"Most people quit because they look how far they have to go, not how far they've come" - Anonymous

2017 definitely hasn't been the easiest for me for various different reasons but I think the key thing that matters is how you deal with the situations, rather than to let them determine the rest of your life. My passion for writing has grown so much this year and I have only just started blogging and journalling again. I missed it so much but I let life get in the way and stop me from doing what I love most. I want to really develop my writing skills next year and improve as much as I can, to hopefully become a writer/journalist in the future.

There is often moments where I reflect on my degree course and think "is this for me?" ," is this where my passions lie most?" and more often than not the answer is no.  I think for future reference I need to consider more about what will make me happy rather than "which degree will get me a better job?" because ultimately my happiness should be the highest ideal that I sought after.

"We do not develop courage by being happy everyday. We develop it by surviving difficult times and challenging adversity" - Barbara de Angelis

Everything in life acts as a lesson or development for personal growth, the good, the bad, the everything, I recently got marks back for a university assignment that I wasn't too happy about I worked really hard for it and got 60% when I usually get 65-70% in my assignments. I was really upset to begin with and starting comparing myself to other people and thought that one grade was the be all and end all of my life. How incredibly dramatic and wrong was I though?

Putting so much pressure on myself is so detrimental to my health, because as a friend of mine so rightly said there is 7 billion people in the world and I will NEVER be the best at everything, that is just impossible. I will be reflecting on this throughout my time at uni (because I know it will be an on-going issue & and it is a major downfall of mine), instead of focusing on what went wrong I will change my mindset to "okay so you messed up one assignment, so what??" & "how can I work on this issue to make sure it doesn't keep occurring?".

"Serve only what serves you" - Leah Richardson

So I obviously had to throw my own quote in here to try and inspire you all. Now guys and girls 2017 has taught me that people aren't always supposed to be in your lives forever, whether that is a friendship or a relationship. People come in and out of your lives to serve as lessons, to teach you about yourselves and to help you grow as people. Losing friends/lovers isn't the easiest thing to manage but I have learnt to look on it as a positive rather than a negative. It takes time to "master the art of detaching yourself" from other people but as soon as you do, you feel a hell of a lot better.

Now I know some of you may have expected this to be a quick short blog post, and I definitely rambled on as per usual but its mainly for me to look back on when I am older and remember how I felt at this time. All in all, I have been very blessed this year with all of my family and my friends by my side, and I cannot wait to grow even more as a person in 2018!

OOTD- Ripped Jeans

Monday, December 29, 2014

                     Hello Fashionistas!

Today, Katie and myself decided to go shopping in town, stop off for a Costa and visit the nearby fair. Because we are both photography students ( if you follow me on social media, you might already know) we wanted to play around with our settings on our cameras and get creative. Katie kindly offered to shoot me for my blog.

My OOTD below is very casual and I would wear these garments out and about, maybe to college.

Nikki Tote Black- Fiorelli £29.00
Puma Suede Classic Fallen Rock Taupe- Footlocker £20.00
Turtle Neck Sweater- New look £8.99
Black Collar Check Coat - New look £37.00
Ripped Black Jeans (not very visible in this photo) - Newlook £20.00

You will have to excuse how short my legs look, I can assure you that they don't normally look like this, and for some reason the rips on my jeans do not show up very well.

Thank you for taking the time to read my blog!

MAX FACTOR CONCEALER REVIEW

Saturday, December 27, 2014

Hello fashionistas!

Today, I am going to be doing a review of Max Factor's Master Touch Under-eye Concealer. I bought this concealer a week ago and have been hooked ever since!

At the time of purchase Max Factor were doing a deal where you spend £15.00 and you get a free gift box of goodies worth up to £31.00. In this gift box, was a mascara, a red lippy, eye shadow and a nail polish.

I have been dying to try a new concealer for ages, but hadn't got round to buying a new one.
This concealer was around £7.99, which isn't too bad compared to other brands.

I had to ask a beauty consultant to help me find my colour, because let's face it we've all had that struggle to find the right foundation/concealer.

There's so much I could say about this product, first of which is that it is amazing! It applies evenly and conceals all of my pores, blemishes, &spots. I would say that the finish is more matte then dewy and creates a flawless look; which I prefer.  I don't even need to apply foundation when I have this on because it already looks like I am wearing it.
If anyone is looking for a new concealer, I would definitely recommend this one!
I would say that I  use a large amount every day and often have to top it up throughout the day, so I am not sure how long it will last because the tube is quite small.

I apply this concealer with my flat Mac makeup brush (very similar to the F80 by Mac). This brush is usually used for foundation but I have found that it works better to conceal my under eye bags and blemishes across my skin.

Thank you for taking the time to read my blog!

My Top 10 Favourite Online Shops

Tuesday, December 9, 2014

Hello Fashionistas!

Today, I thought I would do a quick post about my favourite online shops; if I find anymore I will update this.

As I work at the weekends and attend college during the week, I don't have a lot of free time to go out and shop so I do the majority of my shopping online. A lot of these websites I have found through other people and from watching YouTube channels.

1. Pretty little thing: I am sure a lot of you have already heard about this site, it's one of my top 5 favourite clothing sites. The quality of the garments is incredible and at such low prices, you'd be a fool to miss out! I especially love that the website offers 15% discount for students, helping a broke gal out. I have purchased some of the nicest play-suits from this site for less than £20.00!!!, If you love a bargain (like me ) then you should definitely check this site out.

2. Choies: This is an amazing site that sells a variety of clothing items at discounted prices.
I think that this clothing company is based in China (forgive me if I am wrong) so unless you're a patient customer then bare this in mind when ordering! I have watched so many online shopping hauls and this store is frequently mentioned by people from the UK, US, AUS etc. This shop offers free shipping worldwide which I think is amazing because I have splashed out so much money on shipping items aboard and it takes forever to arrive!.

3. Sheinside: Like Choies, Sheinside is based in China. Sheinside items are often discounted but are of very good quality!. I have had no issues with items being delivered (some people have complained about their's being lost in the post)
The garments look exactly the same as they do on the site.
I would advise you all to be aware of the clothing sizes- because they are from China they may come up a lot smaller in person, so for example if you're a UK size 8 (S) then you may have to order a size 10/12 (M) on the site.

4. Ebay!: Everyone's obviously heard of Ebay, its one of the most popular shopping websites out there! I usually buy gadgets and things for my phone on it, however quite recently I was watching (TheVintageVision)'s YouTube videos on Ebay Fashion Dupes and was inspired to hunt down some little fashion gems.

5. Simply Different: This is more of a jewellery shop, for those accessories mad shoppers. There are SO many different indie/vintage jewellery shops online at the moment ( deadseajewellery& crimsonjewellery) to name a few. Simply different is one of my favourite stores, it is so affordable and I've ordered so many necklaces and rings from the site. They always wrap them up in cute little gift bags with sequins inside them and usually include a thank you note for shopping with them, which I think is so nice.

6. Bank: Now I know that Bank has a high street store as well as an online one, but I have only just recently discovered it. I stumbled upon it (online) by accident and haven't looked back! It reminds me a bit of Asos (which is also a fabulous store) in the sense that it is one big store that offers loads of different brands for example Superdry and Lipsy. One of my favourite brands is Blonde&Blonde because the clothes are very fashionable (very indie and bohemian) but also casual (tartan & basic tees).

7. Etsy: Etsy is a quirky online store that sells everything and anything you would ever possibly need, and more. From handmade vintage garments to mobile phone accessories; you are bound to find something that catches your eye on this site. The best thing about Etsy is that it sells products from all over the world, so it is very unlikely your friends will have the same jewellery, clothes etc as you.

8. Forever 21: Unfortunately the nearest Forever 21 store to me is in Bristol so instead of travelling all the way there, I usually shop online. Forever 21 is unbelievably affordable and so fashionable! It is one of my top 5 online clothing stores that I often spend hours browsing through.

9. Miss Pap: I discovered Miss Pap a long time ago and have bought alot of dresses/playsuits from them. The quality of the dresses is good, however I have had one issue with the website. I ordered a sweet heart neckline little black dress thinking that it would look the same on the model as it would on me (big mistake!), I tried the dress on and it was too big on the boob area and made me look slightly chubbs....ain't nobody got time fo' dat!! So obviously I returned the item but I had to pay for the delivery and the refund took 2 weeks to process so I ended up spending a lot more than I anticipated. OTHER THAN THIS I have had NO trouble with the site, so please do not be disheartened/ put off by this because the garment was nice it just didn't suit me haha.

10. Romwe: I am yet to order something off this site, due to it being a US site and I can't be dealing with waiting a month+ for delivery. The garments on the site are gorgeous and I have eyed up so many nice coats that I have mentally bought haha. After Xmas I will be sure to check out this store to see if any of the coats I want have been discounted then I will order one. If you like online stores that are quirky and different then, this one may be for you!!

I said at the start of this post that it was going to be 'quick' however it took me well over an hour to write this haha, I wanted to carefully select the best websites for you all whilst watching the vampire diaries which isn't a good combination because admittedly it distracted me.

Hope you are all well, thank-you so much for taking the time to read my blog it means alot.

UPDATED - BEAUTY AND LIFESTYLE POST

Friday, August 29, 2014

Hello fashionistas!

I am so incredibly sorry that I have not made a blog post for a long time. I have been very busy as of late sitting my A-level's and GCSE Maths examinations, waiting anxiously for the majority of the summer for my results and if I am honest spending most of my free time watching Netflix. However I am back now, and thought it would be a good time to make a blog post before the summer is completely over.

The weather has been very up and down recently, waking up to sunshine and going to bed hearing rain. This weather situation has actually inspired me to make a blog post on an affordable yet fashionable outfit that is suitable for a sunny afternoon in Camden or a rainy morning in Starbucks. I will be photographing this outfit in the next few days so keep your eyes peeled for updates.

In other news I have made a bold change to my appearance, opting for a change and updating my out dated hairstyle! As many of you may know my hair is rather curly and can be at times, hard to handle. I thought to myself one beautiful summers day, 'Enough is enough, I am getting myself a new hairstyle for the summer'. I will post below before and after shots of my hair and will describe in depth the rigorous process that it took to get my hair looking sassy as ever.

Before :

After  :

The whole process begun when I took a trip into my local town to get a treatment called a 'Texturizer' done on my hair, it is a basically a mild relaxer for Afro Caribbean hair that defines your curls and gets rid of all the frizz whilst making your hair straighter. This treatment lasts between 6-8 weeks, after which I will need to go and get the treatment done again. There is a specific shampoo and conditioner that you will need to purchase to keep your curls looking natural and defined.
WARNING :  If you go back to using your normal shampoo for example: Pantene or Elvive;Your hair will go back to its original form.
Texturizer prices can differ depending on the hair salon but they normally cost between £40-£60 with the salon's own texturizer included in the price.
After this, I purchased my hair pieces for my weave I got one 16''inch and one 14''inch. Both costing at around £50-£60 altogether which isn't bad when you think of how expensive extensions can be.

I traveled to Bristol to my favourite hair salon called 'Georgina's' which is located in Fish Pond. My hairdresser started off by corn rowing my hair which basically just means braiding it. She left out some sections of hair for my side fringe, then moved on to sewing my hair piece/weave onto the braids. It was a very painful process that I would not recommend to anyone that isn't good with pain. Once the weave was secured she proceeded to straighten then curl sections of my hair. Altogether it took around 2 hours, costing at around £55-£60.00 for the weave to be sew in.

Let me know what you all think of this blog post, if you would like more posts on hair then I could do so.

Hope you are all well, thank-you so much for taking the time to read my blog it means alot.
