5 cosy self-care rituals for Winter

Monday, November 25, 2024

The transition from the summer to the crisper, colder months can be hard. Personally, I find this time of year particularly challenging. Perhaps, it's the shorter days or the drop in temperature but this can take some time to get used to.

Over the years, I have cultivated some simple self-care rituals that have helped me to weather the storm of the seasonal changes.

Now, I am partial to an expensive bath bomb and a cheeky takeaway every now and then, however, I am also a firm believer that real self-care, shouldn't cost you a penny.

Keep reading to discover my top 5 cosy self-care rituals for Winter:

 1. Get outside

It's no secret that fresh air can do you the world of good. If you work in an office environment, like myself you'll know that hunching over a desk for 8 hours isn't ideal. Whilst the evenings are getting shorter and the sun is setting earlier, it can feel depressing finishing work at 5pm, and it's already pitch black outside. I would recommend going for a walk before you start work or during your lunch break.

Spending time outdoors can do wonders for your mood and mental well-being, helping you to feel refreshed and re energised.

So, have a sift through Spotify for a good podcast and stomp away, the world is your oyster after all.

 2. Journal

Ah! My trusty journal, my friend and my foe. The one who has simply seen it all, the good, the bad and the ugly.

There's something so soothing about putting pen to paper and word-dumping everything into my journal. From a self-reflective point of view, I enjoy taking stock of where I am in my life and re-visiting my journal in years to come, to marvel at the growth and challenges that I have endured.

Often, I just free-flow with my words and let the creativity pour out of me. Other times I utilise journal prompts like these to aid in my inspiration. It's important not to overwhelm yourself, don't expect to go from never journalling to daily journalling. Instead, view it as a fun activity that you can do whenever you have the time and energy.

Intention is key here, so approach journaling with a sense of purpose rather than pressure. Let it be a space where you can authentically connect with yourself, free from judgment or expectation.

3. Move your body

It's all about finding those simple ways to bring movement into your daily life, from yoga stretches to full-body workouts. Trust me, you’ll never regret showing up for yourself, whether it’s on the mat, at the gym, or simply in your living room.

And yes, dancing in your kitchen to Barry Cant Swim at 10pm on a Monday, does count as moving your body!.

Remember to start small, Rome wasn't built in a day. It's not about following strict workout routines, instead listen to your body and let it guide you. Some days, you might crave a high-intensity workout; on others a slow stretch or calming walk may be all you need.

 4. Nourishing meals

Often, if we're feeling quite low the last thing we want to do is cook ourselves a meal, we can rely on conveniences such as takeaways and unhealthy snacks. It's all about finding that balance - treating yourself to your favourite indulgent snack is fine, but always in moderation.

Craving something warm and comforting, like a hearty stew or a delicious soup? BBC Good Food is a fantastic resource for winter recipe inspiration.

If time is tight but you still want to enjoy great meals, meal kit services like Hello Fresh and Gusto are excellent options. Yes, they require a bit of planning ahead, but imagine having your dinners for the week sorted - no food shopping, no waste, and delicious meals to enjoy at home.

They also offer between 50%-60% off your first box! I've tried Hello Fresh many times and learnt so many new recipes.

With so much time spent indoors, there’s no better season to enjoy the warmth of a home-cooked dish.

 5. Limit screen time

Everything seemed pretty straightforward until now, right? I know what you're thinking cue eye roll—we’re all glued to our phones.

Here’s the thing: instead of going cold turkey, start small. Set a realistic screen time limit and ease into it—it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Maybe aim to cut back 30 minutes a day. That could mean skipping that morning scroll or putting your phone to bed a little earlier in the evening.

Lately, I've been enjoying curling up in bed with a book - getting lost in another world. It's helped to improve my sleep too as I am notoriously a night owl. Sometimes, I find it hard to switch off if I use my phone too much in the evening, so self-preservation and having boundaries with my phone in the evening is helpful!

Since I work in Marketing and spend 8+ hours a day on screens, carving out even an hour to read, take a bath, exercise, or do yoga or meditation has been such a game-changer. It helps me unwind and reconnect with myself after a long day of staring at my laptop.

Thank you for reading my latest blog post!

As always, feel free to share your own cosy self-care rituals for winter, in the comments— I’d love to hear from you!

Top Things To Do In Bristol

Friday, January 5, 2018

Ah Bristol! The creative hub for the likes of Banksy and Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The city that you will never get bored of, the city that should be on your top places to visit in the UK in 2018. It is not a coincidence that this unique city has been voted by The Sunday Times as the UK's best place to live in 2017.

With excellent views across the whole of Bristol, you would be silly to not visit one of the cities most talked about landmarks, situated in Clifton you can go for a leisurely walk across the bridge and then return to the White Lion for a pint with magnificent views across Bristol.

If you're looking for a family, friendly day out or just something to do with your friends; then you should definitely check out Bristols' Balloon Fiesta Festival, which runs from the 9th August-12th August. The best thing about this festival is that it is FREE! Yes folks, it is free so if you're not looking to break the bank then this unforgettable day out would be perfect for you.

3. Motion

Are you looking to wind down and let loose? And are you into drum & bass?, techno?, disco? or grime ?, If you answered yes to all the above then Motion is the place for you. Being named as the 19th best nightclub in the world, Motion really does not disappoint and should definitely be at the top of your lists for things to do in Bristol.

Go and explore the zoo gardens in Bristol, the fifth oldest zoo in the world! For only £10 per adult and £5 per child, you can explore nature and the wildlife without breaking the bank. And this is why Bristol Zoo Gardens are in the Top 10 Things to do in Bristol.

Famously known as Bristols "cultural quarter", the vibrant, cobbled streets of Stokes Croft represent the cities most artistic talents. If you're searching for quirkiness then look no further, Stokes Croft will provide. Be sure to stop off for a bite to eat at The Crafty Egg where you can enjoy an array of hot drinks and brunch favourites.

Why don't you revel in the great architecture that fills the Bristolian streets? In particular Bristols historic Cathedral stands at the very heart of the city and is located on College Green in the West End of the city. The Cathedral is free to visit and is open to the public 365 days a year from 8am to 6pm (Monday - Saturday) and 7:20am - 5pm (Sundays).

Fancy a drink after exploring the lively streets of Bristol all day? then head down to the harbourside where you'll find a selection of restaurants, bars, shops and hotels. Whilst you're there why don't you visit The Apple  where you can socialise with friends over a pint of cider and tuck into a well-deserved lunch. Why wouldn't a sociable, drinking activity be top of your list for things to do in Bristol?

The famous At Bristol, now classically referred to as "We the Curious" is one of the UK's biggest science centres. With hundreds of exhibitions to discover, live shows and a Planetarium, your children will never get bored. With lots of laughter to be had and many memories to be made, you would be silly not to put this on your list of things to do in Bristol.

With 19 breathtaking galleries across 3 floors, Bristol Museum & Art Gallery tells the story of the beginning of time to the present day. With exceptional collections of art, archaeology, geology, and natural history you will be in awe from start to finish. I mean who visits Bristol the hub of creativity and does not visit an art gallery anyway?.

Many of you will drive past it on the motorway and will admire it, but how many of you will actually stop by to marvel at all of its beauty? Commonly referred to as "the yellow house" situated in Stoke Park, The Dower House makes a stunning summers, brisk walk with great views of the whole of Bristol. Rumour has it that the yellow house is haunted, but why don't you just see for yourself?. Stop by on your way in or even on your way out, but this for me has to be one of the best things to do in Bristol.

Have any of you visited Bristol before? If so what were your favourite things that you did there? If not, where would you really like to visit?  I would love to hear back from you in the comments below. Thank you all so much for reading my latest blog post, I really do appreciate it!

Leah's Reflections on 2017

Tuesday, December 26, 2017

With Christmas day now firmly behind us and the New year drawing ever more closer, I thought it would be fitting to write a personal reflection of 2017. For me, it has been a strange year of ups and downs but most importantly a year of self-growth.

"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind do not matter, and those who matter do not mind." - Bernard M. Baruch

As you may already know I started university in September 2016, it was kind of a rocky start for me settling into the "norm" of student life but after a couple of weeks I found my feet and it eventually became like home from home. Moving into 2017, I joined a few societies, one of which being the " UWE Event Society" where we hosted our own event in a quaint little Bristol venue. Meeting so many people at university has allowed me to grow tremendously because I have had to learn to adapt to being around a whole host of different people, some good and some bad. But equally, I  believe that people enter your life for a reason so for that I am grateful.

"The mind is everything, what you think you become" - Buddha

This year I really fell in love with meditation and trying to incorporate it into my daily life, I don't do it everyday but I try to do it as much as I can. Whenever I feel shitty or hurt about something, I use it as a method of relieving pressure and detaching myself from the person/person's or situation. Meditation has helped me sooo much during tough times this year because it has taught me that our feelings are temporary psychological states that don't last forever.

"Most people quit because they look how far they have to go, not how far they've come" - Anonymous

2017 definitely hasn't been the easiest for me for various different reasons but I think the key thing that matters is how you deal with the situations, rather than to let them determine the rest of your life. My passion for writing has grown so much this year and I have only just started blogging and journalling again. I missed it so much but I let life get in the way and stop me from doing what I love most. I want to really develop my writing skills next year and improve as much as I can, to hopefully become a writer/journalist in the future.

There is often moments where I reflect on my degree course and think "is this for me?" ," is this where my passions lie most?" and more often than not the answer is no.  I think for future reference I need to consider more about what will make me happy rather than "which degree will get me a better job?" because ultimately my happiness should be the highest ideal that I sought after.

"We do not develop courage by being happy everyday. We develop it by surviving difficult times and challenging adversity" - Barbara de Angelis

Everything in life acts as a lesson or development for personal growth, the good, the bad, the everything, I recently got marks back for a university assignment that I wasn't too happy about I worked really hard for it and got 60% when I usually get 65-70% in my assignments. I was really upset to begin with and starting comparing myself to other people and thought that one grade was the be all and end all of my life. How incredibly dramatic and wrong was I though?

Putting so much pressure on myself is so detrimental to my health, because as a friend of mine so rightly said there is 7 billion people in the world and I will NEVER be the best at everything, that is just impossible. I will be reflecting on this throughout my time at uni (because I know it will be an on-going issue & and it is a major downfall of mine), instead of focusing on what went wrong I will change my mindset to "okay so you messed up one assignment, so what??" & "how can I work on this issue to make sure it doesn't keep occurring?".

"Serve only what serves you" - Leah Richardson

So I obviously had to throw my own quote in here to try and inspire you all. Now guys and girls 2017 has taught me that people aren't always supposed to be in your lives forever, whether that is a friendship or a relationship. People come in and out of your lives to serve as lessons, to teach you about yourselves and to help you grow as people. Losing friends/lovers isn't the easiest thing to manage but I have learnt to look on it as a positive rather than a negative. It takes time to "master the art of detaching yourself" from other people but as soon as you do, you feel a hell of a lot better.

Now I know some of you may have expected this to be a quick short blog post, and I definitely rambled on as per usual but its mainly for me to look back on when I am older and remember how I felt at this time. All in all, I have been very blessed this year with all of my family and my friends by my side, and I cannot wait to grow even more as a person in 2018!

FIRST YEAR OF UNIVERSITY...RESULTS, NIGHT LIFE, LIVING ON CAMPUS ....WAS IT ALL WORTH IT?

Saturday, June 24, 2017

Hi everyone! I can't believe that my latest blog post was dated back to December last year, I am sooo bad at this blogging malarkey but I vow to try and get back into the swing of things. Lately I have been suffering from writers block and although I had loads of new ideas for content on here, I couldn't find the time or words to sit down and express all of it to you guys. So for that I apologise, and now lets jump straight into the topic for todays blogpost......UNIVERSITY!

So some of you may know that I have just finished my first year of uni at UWE Bristol, I can hand on heart say that I have had a blast and met some of the nicest people that I will be friends with for a very long time.  I received my results from Year 1 today, and I kind of had an idea what they would be based on my progress throughout the year.

For those of you who don't know I study BA Business Management with Marketing and I am pleased to announce that I scored 68.13% as my average for the year, which translates as a high 2:1. I was a bit gutted at first that I didn't get a 1st (70%) just because I know how close I was to getting it and I wanted for once to prove to myself that I am intelligent and can achieve anything that my little heart desires hahah.

Nevertheless I am still very proud of myself and whilst I know that Year 1 doesn't count towards my final grade for the end of my degree, I know that achieving a 2:1 puts me in a good position to apply for placements in third year. As you need to have at least a 2:1 or 1st in Year 1 to do placement.

Now onto the nightlife.... Bristol is one of the busiest, most expensive cities to live in, in the UK. But who really cares when you have the likes of Motion and Lakota on your doorstep??? Not I

One thing that I really love about Bristol is the vast, diversity of people that you will come across, everyone is so unique yet their hearts are filled with gold. In other words, you can walk down to your local shops wearing a bright yellow neon skirt with makeup everywhere at 3pm on a Monday afternoon and no one will bat an eyelid (trust me, I've tried this before), hahaha no really I am joking but I have definitely gone to the shops on campus wearing pajamas and no one has looked at me twice. That my friends is the BEAUTY of Bristol... and if that hasn't swayed you enough to transfer uni's to UWE then you can doing it COMPLETELY WRONG.

I officially moved out of halls two weeks ago and I haven't felt the same since....

I know what you're all thinking, why is she being so dramatic right? Wrong, when you've gone to uni yourself and lived in halls for a year I guarantee that you will feel a similar way. I think for me, more so than anything it is the convenience of it all that makes me miss it so much, if you're lazy like I am and prefer living 2 minutes from all of your friends flats, the campus shops, the gym and lectures then you will understand the pain that I am enduring.

However living on campus means living so far away from town and the night life in Bris, which results in paying ridiculous prices for Ubers and Taxis. I mean who do the taxi drivers think they are?? We are students, not millionaires and I struggle to understand how they can justify charging £20 to drive 10 minutes into town...

But next year I will be living in a house which is half way between town and uni with 5 overly hormonal, dramatic, & hilarious gals. It is safe to say that Bristol won't know whats hit it...

(Yeah and I bet you've heard that one before)

So far I am only one year into my degree so I cannot comment on the rest of my years yet but at the moment, it has definitely been worth going to UWE. For someone who 3 years ago would have never considered university as an option, I have come a long way and feel like I have made the right choice. In regards to my degree course, I do kind of wish that I picked either English Literature or Philosophy instead just because I have a strong interest in both fields and would someday like to become a writer (ahhhh, I've finally said it...theres no going back now Leah). I know that I can always do a Masters in English Lit afterwards if I wish or I can do online courses at home to earn a Diploma in Creative Writing/Blogging. Using this platform to blog regularly will really help me to develop my style of writing and skills set so watch this space haha

Thank you lovely's for taking the time to read my first blog post of 2017!!!! Wow it feels weird writing that, but anyways stay tuned for similar blog posts and if anyone has any feedback or questions please feel free to comment below :)
