Eating out in Bristol on a budget

Monday, July 2, 2018

Okay so, a little while ago (and by a while I mean 6 months oops), I showed you 5 useful ways that you could do uni on a budget Part 1 and Part 2. A recent article that I wrote for Uwe Hub Voice called "Eating out in Bristol on a budget"  prompted me to delve deeper to explore my culinary taste buds.

Admittedly, I don't exactly have the best diet (granted) but I figured why not turn these university posts into a series and (try) to write them as regularly as possible. So far, I have covered uni fashion on a budget, my top 10 things to do in Bristol, and an overview of my first year at UWE.

So here I give to you a compilation of my favourite cheap places to eat out in Bristol.

I mean, are you even a UWE student if you haven't heard of Pizzarova before?; situated amongst the hustle and bustle of Gloucester road, Pizzarova is home to the pengest pizza in Bristol. It is known for miraculously curing hangovers and with 20% off for students, you can't really go wrong! The cheapest pizzas range from £5 (with fewer toppings) to £10 (with more toppings).

And if you find that you cannot eat a whole pizza to yourself then you can go halves with one of your house mates and it will be even cheaper. This makes eating out in Bristol on a budget   even more desirable.

Maybe you're on the go and want a quick bite to eat in between shopping or on your break from work? Well pop down to Three Brothers at Welsh Back for a spectacular £5 lunch deal where you will get a burger and a portion of chips! Additionally, if you download their app Zapper , first time users get £5 credit which means you can eat for free!

With riverside views that you cannot beat, you should definitely hurry down to Three Brothers to dine in style and eat out on a budget.

                                        3.  Yakinori

Japanese food lovers look no further! I give to you..... Yakinori! Situated on lively Park street, this vibrant, quirky restaurant is complete with an open kitchen and amazing lunch time deals. If you need something quick and on the go then you can grab a chicken katsu or terriyaki box from just £3.99.

For those of you who are too lazy to leave your student houses, you will be happy to know that Yakinori is also available on the Deliveroo app and they also offer Vegan and Vege options too!

Maybe student life on a budget isn't so bad after all?

Picture this, you are out for dinner with 6 of your house mates for one of their birthdays, you happen to pass Pie Minister but the
powdery aroma draws you back in. Then you find out that you will receive a cheeky 10% off with your student card, surely this can't be true you ponder?

Yes folks, you have heard it here first... classic pies will cost you a minuscule £5.95 served with gravy! And that my friends is how you do uni on a budget.

  Did someone say pies?

        5. The Canteen

Arguably, with two food awards beneath their belts, it can be said that The Canteen is the bee's knees in Bristol! Their menu includes a range of vegetarian, gluten-free and vegan options.

The Canteen is one of Bristol's most vibrant meeting places as it is situated amongst the energetic Stokes Croft area. Prices at this quirky setting range from £5-£10 and include free soup and crusty bread too! Not to mention The Canteen also host's regular live music from many local and creative geniuses.

Recommended apps

What better way to check out what your local restaurants/bars and coffee shops have to offer than to use Wriggle! My favourite thing about this app is that it automatically updates with deals closest to wherever you are, so imagine you're strolling down the road with your girls and you see loads of cheap food deals flash up! Absolute heaven. The best thing about Wriggle, is that you can visit the creme de la creme of Bris but on a budget.

Another app that we all know and love is Groupon, the infamous app for last minute birthday presents and food deals! We all love a good bargain and if you're planning to go out for food in large numbers then you may want to consider Groupon where you can save yourself some serious £££.

Groupon has some serious offers right now, like Time Out Kitchen's Two Monster Freakshakes for only £7.50 and

Thank you all for the support and for reading my blog posts, I really appreciate it!

UNIVERSITY....MY THOUGHTS SO FAR

Wednesday, October 5, 2016

Hello everyone! I am at university!! It feels so good to finally put pen to paper or in this case keyboard to computer, these past 4 weeks have flown by and I have had a whirlwind experience that is difficult to describe. Freshers week will always be one of my most fond and memorable times because I made so many new friends and went out every single night for 5 days. If you know me, you understand that, that is a big deal because usually after one night out I am completely flat out for the next few days..

At the beginning I missed home tremendously, but as time goes on you just get on with it and adjust to your new life. You get so wrapped up in your new schedule, new social life and new surroundings that you don't tend to think about home as much as you did at the beginning. Plus for me, my uni (UWE Bristol) is a 40 minute drive from my hometown so my family come to visit me most weekends or I go down to see them which always gives me something to look forward to.

5 things that I took for granted before coming to uni:

  • Having my meals cooked for me by my mum, at the start I absolutely hated having to cook my own dinner. I am quite a lazy person so having to put stuff in the oven and wait an hour for it to cook didn't sit well for me at all.
Tip : Always cook/make food 30 mins - 60 mins before you know that you will be hungry, that way you won't be starving and waiting for food to cook and you can just heat it up later on.

  • Having my washing and ironing done for me, although it is week 4 of uni I am still yet to iron a piece of clothing and if that doesn't say it all then I am not sure what does... laziness. I have been quite lucky actually as the times that my parents have came to visit me, they would take my washing home and bring it up a few days later so the first proper wash that I've had to do by myself was today ... only 25 days after starting uni
  • Not having to pay for my groceries, so far I have managed to keep my costs relatively low only spending around £30 which is good.
Another tip: Don't always buy the most expensive foods, you can usually find cheaper alternatives that are just as good at places such as Aldi, Lidl and sometimes even Asda (smart priced goods).

  • Good, fast-working wifi, despite paying £79 for the fastest working wifi on campus mine is just as shocking as the free wifi. Imagine all 6 members of your flat trying to watch Netflix at the same time... you can bet your dollar that most web browsers will crash and stop working. The servers can't handle everyone trying to stream movies at the same time and subsequently you get 6 pissed off students.
  • A TV with Sky movies, at home I was always very much up to date with current affairs such as the news channel, and at uni I honestly have no idea what is going on in the world. You could tell me that millions have people have died from a rare disease and I'd probably believe you... I liked being able to go out and miss one of my favourite programmes, knowing that I have recorded it and can watch it later that week. If I miss something thats not shown on 4od, BBC iplayer or the ITV Hub then I am basically screwed and there is no going back.
I've joined so many different societies, mainly business related but whether I actually stick to going to the meet-ups is another thing. I have been going to the events society with one of my flat mates and her best friend and so far so good! We are currently planning a fundraiser to raise more money for the society to host events such as festivals and pop up cinemas. I will keep you all posted with my progress and grades etc :)

MY FIRST FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE

Wednesday, September 7, 2016

READING FESTIVAL 2016

So last monday, I had just got back from my very first festival. I decided to go hard or go home and selected Reading as my first one, this was mainly because of how popular it is - all my friends wanted to go, it's only an hour from where I live and I liked most of the bands playing. Nothing could have really prepared me for the festival life, I knew that I had to just get there and experience it for myself and bloody hell what an experience it was!

Camping or even glamping for 5 whole days is an absolute struggle and a half, having little access to showers and water facilities made the whole duration difficult. I think what I found the hardest was not being able to use clean toilets, we had to take our own loo roll with us each time we wanted to go and the toilets were such a trek from my campsite (Yellow camp) that I found myself holding it in or even worse squatting in a muddy field and drunkenly pissing all over myself.

Festivals/holidays really do test your friendships with people, just think about it you are with your friends 24 hours a day for 5 days, you won't always want to do the same things nor will you want to see the same bands/acts as them. Make sure that you go with people who have similar musical interests as you, otherwise you might miss out on seeing some of your favourite bands.

Another tip : Take loads of glitter and by loads I mean shit loads! At festivals people tend to go crazy with their makeup so don't be afraid to stand out. Order loads of stick on gems, bright blue eyeliners and go mental kids.

Abbie was our glitter artist for the weekend and is seen recreating a similar bold look on Megan's face.

So obviously I took loads of 'pre-reading' outfit selfies to help me decide what to wear for each day, this really helped me to stay organised at the festival because I wasn't pulling my hair out wishing that I had brought different outfits that went better together.

Despite all of the dramas and hardships that Reading threw at me, I still managed to have a decent time. I just know for the future that maybe 5 whole days isn't for me and maybe I would be better suited to other festivals such as V-fest and Wireless.

Thank you all for reading, stay tuned for other similar posts coming up very soon

UPDATE- WHERE HAVE I BEEN?

Monday, September 5, 2016

Hello everyone! I can't believe that it has been nearly half a year since I last wrote a blog post, I know that I have been slacking and again I apologise for this, in regards to my massive haul that I was supposed to upload, I ended up using most of my makeup before I got home and then I couldn't find all of it when it came down to taking photographs. I want to try and do some more reviews of new makeup products that I have bought recently, its just finding the time to do so.

So in July, I went on a Mediterranean cruise with my family for my parent's 25st Wedding Anniversary, we visited the likes of Gibraltar, Nice, Cadiz, Palma de Mallorca and Malaga. We dined like royalty for two weeks straight, having 3 courses meals every single day. It's safe to say that I enjoy the comfort of my own home more than at sea. Being able to shove a pizza in the oven at 10pm is more me than having a set dining time every single day.

After enjoying a lovely mouthwatering 3-course meal on board in our favourite restaurant (Macbeth), we changed our outfits and hit the Magaluf strip for a few hours. To say it was an 'experience' is an understatement....

UPDATE

Hello everyone! I am really sorry for not posting for over 3 months, I have been really busy with my coursework at college and sorting out my UCAS application.

As you may know I am doing a third year at college, studying A2 Religious studies, A2 Photography and AS English. I have applied for university for this September to study Business Management/Marketing.

At the moment I am looking at going to either UWE Bristol, Gloucestershire or Southampton Solent Uni. Each course varies depending on the uni and I am stuck between doing a Fashion Marketing degree, a standard Marketing degree or Business management with Marketing.

Luckily, I have 3 months to figure out which course I want to study and which uni I want to go to.

I turned 19 on Sunday!! God I feel old, can't believe that I am turning 20 next year, it just doesn't feel real at all. I spend my birthday shopping in Cabot with my friend Megan then we went out in the evening which was nice.

We look like actual predators here ffs
I will be uploading my birthday haul shortly so look out for that!!

5 HIGH END AND HIGH STREET FOUNDATION REVIEWS, SWATCH TESTS

Thursday, July 30, 2015

Hello everyone!

Today I will be reviewing five different foundations that range from light to full coverage. The prices between my foundations vary; with some being high-end and others being high street. Some of these foundations I have been using for years and others I have been using for a few weeks. I will be providing you with SWATCH tests on all of the foundations, and showing you the tools that I use to create a flawless finish.

( Left to Right : No7 Stay Perfect Foundation, Maybelline Fit me Foundation, MAC Studio Fix Fluid, Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation and Revlon's Photo Ready Foundation)

I have been using this foundation for a good two years now, its light-weight and easy to build upon. This foundation is medium to full coverage but requires a couple of layers to create a flawless look. I would recommend this product to people with combination, normal to dry skin because the foundation is moisturising and has SPF15 inside it. The colour match service provided by Boots is fantastic because you're guaranteed to find a foundation in your shade as there is a wide variety. I don't really think you could go wrong for £14.50 when the foundation lasts for ages. The foundation matches my skin tone so well, however I usually opt for darker shades because I want to be more tanned.

I would rate this foundation a 3.5/5 because it's lightweight and good for the price!

I apologise for the poor lighting guys, the light brown colour on the far right is the shade of this foundation.

This foundation got recommended to me by a friend a couple of months ago, she has the same skin tone as me and used this product religiously. I thought I would try it out and see what the hype was about; first of all I think that the packaging is really boring.
The packaging of a product is so important because it usually determines whether I buy it or not; sometimes I've bought products purely because the packaging was nice. The foundation retails at £7.99 which is really affordable if you're on a budget.

The shade range of the Fit me foundations really dissapointed me because in my local Boots there was only a choice of 3 colours to choose from. However, when I looked online there is a variety of shades but it is a massive gamble because you don't know what colour will match your skin tone best. I feel like Maybelline doesn't really cater to darker skin girls, which is a daily struggle for me.
In terms of coverage, I would say that this foundation is light to medium because it doesn't completely conceal impurities but can be built up. I usually use one layer of this foundation before I apply my MAC Studio Fix Fluid to create a matte finish.

I would rate this product  2.5/5 because of the lack of shades available for darker skin zones.

I have only used this foundation a handful of times, it is medium coverage which can be built up to full coverage. I do find that if I apply this foundation after I have put a primer/moisturiser on my face first that it becomes very oily and tends to come off my skin very easily. Although there is a wider variety in the shade range for Revlon as opposed to Maybelline, the foundation itself is very pinkie/yellowy toned and would need to be mixed with another foundation to avoid this.
So far this foundation hasn't wowed me and for £12.99 in the Beauty outlet, I thought it would have by now.

I would rate this foundation for a 2/5 purely because it doesn't stay on my skin for very long and I hate having to apply loads of layers throughout the day.

This is one of my favourite foundations because it has a matte finish and is full coverage! I am so obsessed with foundations that provide full coverage to hide my blemishes. I have heard so many mixed reviews about this product that I decided to try it out for myself!. I have worn this foundation out on many nights out and it has stayed in place all night long. It is more on the high-end spectrum of foundations retailing at £30.00, which is a good investment if you like high-quality products. I had my shade tested for this foundation back in February and after going on holiday, I have come back too dark to be able to wear this. Even 3 months after I came back from holiday, it is still too light for me which secretly breaks my heart. So I think this foundation will have to be saved for the winter when I am slightly lighter.

I would rate this foundation 4/5 because although it's an all-round great foundation, it can sometimes be hard to remove using make-up wipes or Garnier Micellar water.

As you can see from this picture, Ivory Beige is way too pale for my skin at the moment *sighs*

And my all time favourite foundation goes to........ MAC Studio Fix Fluid. I purchased this foundation on holiday for around $30 and can't get enough of it! The texture of the foundation is very creamy and it applies evenly if used correctly (with a beauty blender). This product is full coverage and I tend to use one layer day to day, and two-three layers if I am going on a night out. This shade is darker than my natural skin tone, however when mixed with concealer it evens it out.
I have had this foundation since April and I still have loads of product left, despite using it everyday which is great!

The only thing that annoyed me about this product is that it didn't come with its own foundation pump, which makes it extremely difficult to pour out. I eventually bought my own one because I got frustrated with how much product that I was wasting when doing my foundation.

I would rate this foundation a 4/5 because there is a wide variety of different shades and the coverage is fab!.
